The compilation and publication of such a detailed work pre-
sents a monumental undertaking. No attempt has been made,
however, to include notes, book reviews, necrology, transactions
of professional societies, or articles appearing in the more popular
periodicals. Nevertheless, the list of items of interest to the Texas
historian is remarkably replete, considering the tremendous area
included in the Trans-Mississippi West. The classification of en-
tries, topical contents, and author index would tend to make the
Classified Bibliography one of the first source books to be con-
sulted by the researcher, and its value as a reference catalog can-
not be overestimated. Winther and the Indiana University Press
have performed a genuine service to Trans-Mississippi historians
in compiling a one-volume, quick-reference bibliography of the
periodical literature of that vast region. A big book for a relatively
small price, it may prove to be as indispensable as the dictionary,
encyclopedia, gazetteer, or almanac.

This book consists of edited letters written by a Norwegian
immigrant, Elise Waerenskjold (1815-1895), who settled in Van
Zandt County, Texas, in 1847, and lived most of her life in the
vicinity of Four Mile Prairie. Theodore C. Blegen in his foreword
summarizes well the value of this type publication with the com-
ments that, "Her letters [to Norway] present a kaleidoscopic por-
trait of the immigrant colonies in Texas with which she cast her
