paign, the battle of Chickamauga, a raid into Tennessee in the
fall of 1863, and fighting in East Tennessee after the battle of
Chattanooga. Correspondence for 1864 centers on the illness and
death of George Turner and the wounding and death of Frank
Batchelor. Included at that point are reports from the Houston
Daily Telegraph, the Galveston Tri-Weekly News, and the Gon-
zales Inquirer, with brief excerpts from L. B. Giles, Terry's Texas
Rangers.
Contained in the letters is a vast amount of information about
the Rangers, their rations, uniforms, equipment, pay, camp-life,
regimental politics, religious revivals, and the organization of a
masonic lodge in the unit. The correspondence also presents some
insight into the soldiers' thoughts and feelings about home and
their desire to return to Texas, conscription and those who op-
posed it, the effects of war on the South, guerrilla warfare, and
European intervention. At various times the two Rangers also
expressed views on their leaders, including Benjamin F. Terry,
John A. Wharton, Thomas H. Harrison, George W. Littlefield,
Jefferson Davis, and Braxton Bragg, whose generalship both men
continued to defend through the battle of Chickamauga.
Publication of the Batchelor-Turner letters provides a fine addi-
tion to the primary sources available on Texas units in the Civil
War. Association members will also be pleased to note the men-
tion of the Handbook of Texas and the Southwestern Historical
Quarterly as being of primary assistance in the editing of these
letters. Helen Rugeley's editorial efforts, which include extensive
annotation, an index, and biographical sketches and pictures of
the major correspondents, show some lack of background in the
history of the Civil War. On the whole, however, they make the
book more interesting and understandable than the letters alone
would be. ALWYN BARR461
