Texas Collection
among the rare and scarce items of Texana in the Vandale Col-
lection were printed in E. W. Winkler's article, "The Vandale
Collection," in the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, LIV, 27-61.
After selling his books to the University, Vandale began collecting
again. He also became interested in the history of the fur trade
in Texas and in the Mississippi Valley and added material about
the hide industry to his collection.
In addition to his service as president of the Association and
as an executive councilman, Vandale was an active member of
the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society and, with Newton Har-
rell, established the Vandale Historical Essay Contest under the
auspices of the Panhandle group.
Vandale had been active in the oil industry of the Panhandle
for many years. He was district land man for Magnolia Petroleum
Company from 1923 until his retirement in 1947. He had engaged
in land work in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and
Texas.
David M. Warren, patron and long-time friend of the Associa-
tion, was honored along with Dr. Alberto Gainza Paz, editor of
Argentina's La Prensa before its seizure by the Peron government,
at the dedication ceremonies of the new journalism building on
the University of Texas campus on October 31 and November 1,
1952. The two illustrious newspapermen were presented hand-
illuminated scrolls. Warren's read:
Recognizing the many contributions to education for journalism of
David M. Warren, publisher of the Panhandle Herald and regent of
the University of Texas, we, the staff members of the school of journal-
ism, hereby express our appreciation of his great assistance to our
school.
During the ceremonies Warren made an address on the future
of journalism education in Texas.
Association members were prominent among Texas writers
honored at the annual dinner of the Texas Institute of Letters
in Dallas in November.
