the sea, passing," with ease "from one to the other," recited to be
equal on land to the most improved railroad cars and on sea to the
best steam vessels. It would be interesting indeed to know the
actual workings of this company and its vehicles.
Among the general laws of this period are many of the most
important that have ever been enacted in Texas. Space forbids
specializing. It is sufficient to say that many of the statutes now
in force have come down to us without change, and others can not
be properly understood and applied in their present form unless we
go back to their first enactment and trace them through their sev-
eral changes. This the lawyer or student who has Gammel's Re-
