The acounting courses range
from introduction and principles
of accounting to advance ac-
counting and cost accounting sys-
tems Other courses offered are "Gov-
ernmental Accounting" and
"Auditing Theory and Practice"
The major part of the curricu-
lum in the department is the
general business courses These
courses arc designed to prepare
students to obtain a job in a store
company or other business firm
Also some business administra-
tion students graduate with the
intention of teaching business
subjects in the public schools
General business courses in the
department range from "Intro-
duction to Business" through
more advanced courses such as
"Office Management"
Students in the business admin-
istration department also may
take courses in ' Business Mach-
ines " in which they learn to
operate the various machines
used in office work such as
duplicating machines calculators
adding machines and dicta-
phones The fundamental elements and
concepts in economic life arc
discussed in such courses as
' Principles of Economics" and
' Money and Banking "
One of the most popular cour-
ses of study for girls at McMurry
is secretarial science in the busi-
ness administration department
This phase of the curriculum
includes courses in typewriting
foi beginners and for second and

portunities for a graduate in this
field include marketing teaching
of commercial subjects statistic
work and numerous others
"Experience and training" are
watchwords that make for success
in accounting "Although the ac-
countant is one of those rare pro-
fessional workers who does not
need a college degree (even
CPA's don't actually need a
degree) the better postions are
open only to those with college
educations" Helpful courses for
the future accountant are money
and banking auditing business
law statistics cost accounting
and accounting theory
One of the physical require-
ments for bookkeeping or ac-
countants is an especially good

McMurry College's Department
of Business Administration has
as its purpose the development of
strong intellectual academic and
business abilities in its students
This purpose is fulfilled by a staff
of three who offer work in cither
accounting secretarial science
economics or general business
Howard Wilklns associate pro-
fessor of business administra-
tion and Certified Public Ac-
countant teaches intermediate
and advanced accounting Wilkins
has held the Certified Public Ac-
countant certificate since 1951
Wilkins receives nls BS degree
from McMurry in 1947 and his
Master of Business Administra-
tion degree from the University
of Texas in 1949 He was Vale-
dictorian of his 1947 graduation
class at McMurrj a member of
Ko San and Alpha Chi At the
U of T Wilkins was a member
eyesight The nature of the work
is a strain on the eyes and rep-
resents one of the hazards of the
job
Salesmanship is a profession
that operates at the highest level
of human endeavor Because sell-
ing merchandise to the consumer
is what keeps industry active
the salesmen are key-men in our
economy It has often been point-
ed out that no item of production
is profitable until it is sold
This explains why selling now
offers one of the highest career
potentials in our time The last
census of the Department of
Commerce showed that there are
more people earning above $5000
in the selling profession than in
any other scores of salesmen earn
$100000 a year or more
Clerical work has often been
called the "Great Field of Op

fessor of business administration
joined the McMurry College fac-
ulty in 1946 He teaches typing
shorthand business machines of-
fice management business math
and business correspondence
This year Richards has a class
of 14 in ' Teaching Business Sub-
jects in High Schools
Richards received his B S de-
gree from North Texas State Col-
lege and his MS degree fiom
Sul Ross State Teachers College
He had 20 years of public school
teaching and administrative ex
penence before joining the Mc
Murry faculty
Dr Andrew C Rockovcr who
hns been chairman of the econo-
mics department since 1951 is u
native of Warsaw Poland In
1949 the Board of Education of

work than in any other single
field The field has grown more
rapidly during the last 60 years
than any other major occupation-
al grouping Many employers
seem to be giving increasing pre-
ference in then hiring policies
these days to two types of clerical
workers Those that have a de
cided edge are people who can
fill positions requiring respon
sibihty and executive ability
clerical workers with a college
education and preferably some
additional business college train
