Last night, Tarleton State University’s
Gay/Straight Alliance hosted a pride
march. Students marched around campus
holding signs to support the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, and queer and/
or questioning, as known as the LGBTO
community.
“We are hoping to raise awareness
and spread knowledge about the LGBTO
community on campus. Additionally,
we want to let people be aware of the
support available within the Tarleton and
Stephenville community,” stated Prairie
Parnell, faculty adviser for the Gay/
Straight Alliance.
The Gay/Straight Alliance is an
organization on campus whose goal is
to encourage and advocate the peace
and acceptances among all people
regardless of sexual orientation and/or
gender identification. The Gay/Straight
Alliance aims to help those who are
experiencing distress due to their sexual
orientation and/or gender identification.
The organization also seeks to battle
injustices made to individuals or groups
due to sexual preferences.
“If students want to march, they can
make signs or just walk with us,” Parnell
said.
Prior to the march, there were be
booths stationed outside the Dining Hall.
“The booths had interactive games
along with i nformation about other
organizations. We had some people
bringing free condoms, free popsicles
and we had musical chairs,” said Shelby
Martinez, the student in charge of
organizing this year’s event.
This year is the third year that the
march is held. It started in 2014 as an
indoor event and has since been moved
outdoors.
