About that fame over at Tarleton . . .
Aa you have already heard I'm sure Coach Ranaom took the
men off the floor with eight minutes to fo in the fame it was all
becauie of the poor Inefficient refereeing of the official whom Johr
Tarleton officiate had summoned to call the fame.
Time and time again Coach Ransom had to leave the bench and
interrogate the referee as to why
his men were being charged with
fouls so as the game went on it
was easy to see that trouble was
brewing.
This continued til Coach Ran-
som finally elected to take his
men off the court rather than
have any more friction.
We are not blaming the Tarle-
ton officials nor the athletes. It
isn't their fault if the referee goes
haywire. They were just playing
the game and trying to win and
they were taking their free shots
whether they were called right
or not
The referee himself was evident-
ly for neither team. He did the
same to Tarleton. The lilies
marked up several undeserved
free shots themselves and got by
with faulty plays several times.
to you see that the decision was
not the aot of an Impulse or Ill-
feeling. Even the Tarleton sup-
porters saw the poor decisions of
the referee and they lost their
most valuable men before the
game was five minutes old.
The official is a mighty fine fel-
low I'm sure but he lost the con-
fidence of all the players early in
the game with his consistent in-
efficient rulings. Probably he was
honest in his mistakes but it is
the right of any team to walk off
the floor and that is just what
Coach Ransom saw fit to do.
The standard basketball rules
oall for two referees. This game
had only one and ordinarily that
would have been all right had
there not been so much friction.
There has already been much
said about the situation both pro
and con and in some papers it
has been made a joke at our ex-
pense. So the best thing to do
in this case is to let the matter
drop as it wilL
I know that this hurts any
school but as far as Daniel laker
Is ooncerned It couldn't be helped.
We have prospeots of a good team
one of the best In years and we
want that team on top. We want
them to not only present a su-
perior brand of play but also dis-
play a spirit of sportsmanship
that makes a great team a great
team; a spirit that will always be
worthy of Daniel laker.
I'm not taking either side: I'm
just giving you the story as it
happened. Now that you have it
forget it Look forward to one ox
DBC's best seasons. Attend all the
games and help the team and the
coaches attain the aforementioned
spirit Get behind them and yell
just that much harder. Root for
a team that may be beaten but
never out.
We present the following signed
statement:

Oddities in the News: Here's
a real belleve-it-or-not dug up
by the Navy's crack football pub-
licity department: "Two games
were on Navy's schedule for 1893.
Navy won the first game 28-0.
Johnson of Navy starred in this
game and was largely responsible
for the victory. Soon thereafter
he resigned from the Naval acad-

Navy played Virginia for the sec-

the mainstay of the Virginia team.
Virginia with Johnson won the

All-Stars 50-19
Thirteen members of the Daniel
Baker basketball squad helped de-
feat a hard-fighting group of
Brownwood all-stars by a 00-19
score last Friday night at the
DBC gymnasium.
The game was the first of the
season for the Billies and was
played after the Brownwood-Cisco
contest.
LeRoy O'Gulnn a freshman who
started at center was the top
scorer with ten points. Ray Glea-
ton and Mac Miller led for the
losers with seven and six. All-
around play of Gus Snodgrass
all-star guard was one of the fea-
tures of the game. Despite extra
poundage and the constant threat
of losing his pants Snodgrass
broke up a number of DBC plays
and fed the ball to teammates for
a number ef good scoring chances.
Although he was in the game
only a short time Wilson Lewis
found the basket for eight DBC
points.
