The Special Collections Department collects and preserves rare and unique materials including rare books, oral histories, university archives, historical manuscripts, maps, microfilm, photographs, art and artifacts. The department is located in UNT's Willis Library in the fourth floor Reading Room.

This collection contains photographs, video, and scripts from news stories produced by the KXAS-NBC 5 station.
Video footage from the WBAP-TV station in Fort Worth, Texas, to accompany a series of news stories. The first is about the opening of the British Fortnight celebration at Neiman Marcus in Dallas and the honored guest Princess Alexandra . The second is about the filing of a lawsuit by a Mr. Fritz, that includes a brief audible interview with him. The third is about two teens being caught in an attempted robbery, which they can be seen being led to court for. The fourth is about authors Louisa E. Rhine, Joseph L. Schott, and John Fairchild, attending a dinner at the library. They are seen greeting people, and Ms. Rhine is seen being interviewed. The fifth and final story is about a car crashing into a house. Footage of the wreckage is shown, as well as the homeowner.
