PREFATORY WISDOM
I saw also a cricket
In a tavern drinking wine,
While a cockroach cooked some yams,
On which both did dine.
I saw a nanny goat
A-sitting in a chair
And as solemn as an owl
A-combing out her hair.
I saw two furious rabbits
Snarling at two coyotes,
And a rattlesnake reclining
Twirled his long bigotes (mustaches).
I saw two stubborn burros
Writing at a table,
While a parrot cooked tortiilss,
For she was very able.
A grasshopper I saw ploughing
With a yoke of javalines,
And a bullfrog mounting a horse--
High boots hid his jeans.
Just as the sun was coming up
Night before last at midday,
A blind man sat writing
What a deaf-mute had to say.
All this is made up;
Yet it's composed of facts,
Because, although the truth,
True things are what it lacks.
So go across that bridge
Made of the ribs of a louse,
And stepping on the beak of a rooster,
Arrive at your own house.vii
