SINGERS AND STORYTELLERS
Texas-Mexican songmaker borrow from the current art music
of his day. For the rest he went to the Mexican folk forms with
which he was familiar. The structure of the Song to Grant is
that of the Mexican romantic Cancidn, which in 1867 had
reached the height of its development. The same is true of most
of the Song to Zaragoza, except the final part, which goes from
a martial movement into allegro. Here the songmaker harked
back to the folksong of Spanish type, which was current in
Mexico before the rise of the Canci6n.6
