I was born in a place called New Salisbury, Ohio.
Tell me a little bit about your educational
background.
Well, I had put in eight years of grade school, four
years of high school, and I went for over three years
in college after I got out of the service.
When did you join the Navy?
I joined the Navy on the 25th of September, 1940.
And why did you decide to go in the service at that
time?
Well, I had been working as a mechanic, and another
fellow, an acquaintance of mine, had been thinking
about joining the service, and we had been talking
together. In preparation for my job as working as a
mechanic, I had went to Detroit, Michigan, and when I
got out of school there, I decided I wanted to be a
mechanic. As I said before, this fellow kept after me
to join the service, so one winter I decided that
would be a good idea because getting underneath thosecars and having snow fall in your face and all was not
too appealing. So we went in the service.
Why did you select the Navy as opposed to one of the
other branches?
