SWT was founded on the site of a Chautauqua, which was held here 1885-95. The
building fell in, so the city deeded the land to the state to build a school
to
prepare school teachers. It was founded in 1899 and opened in 1903. For our
centennial in 1999, we held four Chautauquas, which were so successful that we
decided to have one a year after that. Had one in June 2000, but have not
planned the 2001 event yet.

The main article is about visitor attractions--primarily historical--in
Waxahachie. But it includes a sidebar story on Chautauquas. I mention that
one existed in San Marcos, but if you had a date for an assembly in 2001, I
could try to include that as well, even though it's not at the original
structure.

We had four in 1999 and one in 2000. We want to do one in 2001 but haven't
gotten it into the works yet. Is this a historical article?

Mr. Rowe,
I got your name from Kirk Hunter in Waxahachie. I'm doing a short article
for Texas Highways on the Chautauqua there and the general movement. He
indicated held a centennial Chautauqua event in '99. Are there plans for
more, especially this year? The article runs in June.
