This is Ron Marcello interviewing George.Hemingway for
the North Texas State University Oral History Collection.
The interview is taking place on May 18, 1974, in Austin,
Texas. I'm interviewing Mr. Hemingway in order to get
his reminiscences and experiences and impressions while
he was at Ford Island during the Japanese attack at
Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Now Mr. Hemingway, to begin this interview would
you very briefly give me a biographical sketch of your-
self. In other words, tell me when you were born, where
you were born, your education--things of that nature.
Just be very brief and general.
I was born in Galveston, Texas, on March 27, 1923. I've
got just a high school education. I went from high
school into the Navy.
When did you enter the Navy?
1940.
Why did you decide to enter the service?
At that time jobs were pretty hard to find, and it was
hard to maintain a good job. All the good jobs were
