Activities or Observation:
On Thursday I attended the SBTM afterschool where we worked on the CEIP, in which TETAC is included.
After the meeting, all the participants attended the PTA meeting. After the business portion, Judy and her art club
students presented a skit on museum manners (in the auditorium) followed by a mini-museum experience led by the
Marcus Fellows in the cafeteria. There were 44 people present, which is a good parent crowd for this school. They
have had problems getting teachers involved, but have had good success with programs such as the one this night
(Grace Bries came, as she is still on the SBMT).
The next day, I went back (at the assistant principals' request) to present model lessons in 5 classes of second
graders on Native American arts and culture, showing a lot of my personal collection.
Mentor Notes and Reflections:
Judy was nervous about the skit since this is her first such effort, but the skit and her kids were great. She told me
later that Joyce had them repeat it for the entire school the next day. I couldn't be more pleased with her - she
seems already embraced by the school culture.
Sarah wants me to come back to do at least one more day for model teaching. There are teachers I haven't
worked with yet this year and they keep asking for me. I believe model teaching helps me get to know the teachers
(and their strengths and weaknesses) and seems to lower their fear of not "doing it right." Again, as I have
mentioned before, Sarah arranges my schedule for the whole day with the teachers, making better use of my time
and choosing where she thinks I should go.I
