Courses in the Department of Biology are designed to meet the needs
of both graduate and undergraduate students who are preparing to enter
the fields of professional biology and biological research, to teach biology
or to do further graduate study in any of the fields of science, as well
as of those who wish to prepare for admission to dental and medical
schools and for training in medical technology. Service courses are
offered for majors in physical education, home economics, chemistry,
and elementary education.
The Department of Biology offers curricula leading either to the
degree of Bachelor of Arts or to the professional degree, Bachelor of
Science in Biology.
BACHELOR OF ARTS
Biology courses required for the degree of Bachelor of Arts are as
follows: Biology 131, 132, 200, 205, 300, 305, 335, 337, 400, 405, and 410.
The first minor for this degree may be taken either in the sciences or in
any othei department that the student may elect. The second minor
should be in the field of chemistry and should include Chemistry 141,
142, 231, and an additional three hour course. In addition, the student
must complete Physics 131-132 and six hours of mathematics.
A typical program leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts is
outlined below. Students with superior high school preparation may
wish to begin foreign language in the freshman year or add an elective.FRESHMAN YEAR
