A not4d heart transplant specialist has asked for an
official inquiry into Dr. Denton Cooley's artificial
heart ol~ration in Houston. Officials at the National
Heart Institute in Washi- gton say Dr. Michael DeBakey
has advisd them that Cooley' s mechanical heart was
probably made in DeBakey' s federally financed Baylor
University laboratory. Research financed by the
government would be subject to federal guidelines on
testing. But, Cooley told newsmen in Baltimore the
device he used has no connection with research being
done at Baylor. The Houston surgeon has been under
criticism from fellow doctors for implanting an
artificial heart in 47-year-old Haskell Karp--who
later died of pneumonia. Cooley had this explanation.
