Notes

George Combe (21 October 1788 - 14 August 1858), writer on phrenology and education. Born in Edinburgh, attended University of Edinburgh, and became a lawyer. After seeing a medical dissection of a brain, became interested in phrenology. His first publication was in 1817 in the Scots Magazine, and continued to publish throughout his life. In 1820 he helped found the Phrenological Society, and in 1823 began to publish the Phrenological Journal. He lectured throughout England, and gained attention in Europe and the United States. In 1828 he published The Constitution of Man. In 1833 he married Cecilia Siddons, daughter of the famous actress Sarah Siddons. In 1838 he and his wife visited the United States, where he observed the treatment of the criminal classes and delivered some 150 lectures. In 1840 he published Moral Philosophy, and in 1841 Notes on the United States of America. In the 1840’s he traveled throughout Europe and lectured in Germany, and in 1848 founded a school. In 1858 he wrote The Currency Question. In 1857 he issued On the Relation between Science and Religion. He died in 1858 at Moor Park, Surrey, England.
