Head-and-shoulders portrait of Dr. Ashley Newton Denton, son of John B. Denton (1806-1841), for whom Denton County and City are named, and Mary Greenlee Stewart (1808-1848). Dr. Denton was born in 1837, the year the Denton family moved from Clark County, Arkansas, to Clarksville, Texas. He studied medicine and served as a surgeon in the confederate army.
