[Tax Receipt for Levi Perryman,1899]

Description: Record of receipt for taxes recorded Office of Collector of Taxes for the year 1899. The statement near the top of the page says "Received of Levi Perryman the following amounts in payment of State, School and County Taxes for the year A.D. 1899, on Personal Property and the following described Real Estate"; it is followed by a list including abstract numbers, survey numbers, original grantees, and number of acres. Totals are listed in the upper-right corner of the page.

[McKnight Plaza - Palestine]

Description: Photo of McKnight Plaza taken during the 1930s. This business district was the primary area for businesses owned and operated by African-Americans in Palestine, and was located in the 100 block of Avenue A, on the south side of the street next to what is now United Realty (the former First National Bank Building). The building was demolished in 1945.

[Temple Opera House]

Description: Photo of the Temple Opera House which was located on the corner of Avenue A and Oak Street in downtown Palestine. As per the 1898-1899 city directory, the manager was a man named W.E. Swift. The building has since been destroyed.

Sangcura Sprudel Wells

Description: The Sangcura Sprudel Wells. On back of photograph is written: "Located at 800 N.W. 2nd Avenue." The building was later moved to 314 NW 5th Street. The porches were enclosed and it was turned into a rooming house. The building burned down in 1973.

Description: Index to various Galveston City Company accounts, starting with a list at the start of ledgers containing minutes, wills, inventories, bonds and oaths, return sales, and annual & final accounts. Personal accounts are listed alphabetically by last name with various notations and columns labeled W, I, Br O, R S, and Accts. Newspaper clippings at the front of the ledger list all of the victims killed during the hurricane that happened September 8, 1900.

Description: Galveston National Bank check made out to W. J. Hughes & Co. for $33.90 and signed by W. K. McAlpine. The background of the check has a yellow seal in the center for the U.S. Internal Revenue and the text "Documentary Stamp" around the number 2 on either side of the seal. The back of the check is stamped and endorsed by W. J. Hughes & Co.
