Mr. Rice's handsome Charro costume was made of diamond-cut pieces of eggplant. A metal cutter had been made especially to cut these diamond shapes. Each diamond was carefully wrapped in double-stick cellophane tape and then stuck on the base of the costume. To make the stripes down the trouser legs, the inside of grapefruit peel was scraped and shaped by pinking shears. The handsome sarape was made of strips of many fruits and vegetables to get the many colors and the fringe was of a hearty grass. Few men modeled so his costume was wildly applauded.

This winning ensemble is called a "landlubbers's outfit" especially popular with schoolgirls because of its simplicity. Blouse was made of the inner skin of white grapefruit, cut in diamond-shaped pieces; waistcoat of red poinsettia petals, and skirt in inch-square pieces of eggplant. Buttons on the costume were made of lacquered papaya seeds, and her handbag was of eggplant. Inner skin of grapefruit formed a soft, pliable material for the blouse. Two-thousand one-inch pieces of eggplant were cut, and 36 grapefruits and 36 poinsetta petals were used. Total cost was $6; time required to make was 262 hours.
