Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. Series 1, Volume 1.
Records of the War of the Rebellion include copies of naval correspondence (reports, letters, telegrams, and general orders) from both the Union and Confederate Navies discussing their operations. According to the introduction in the first volume, the first series "embraces the reports, orders, and correspondence, both Union and Confederate, relating to all naval operations on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and inland waters of the United States during the war of the rebellion, together with the operations of vessels acting singly, either as cruisers or privateers, in different parts of the world. These reports are accompanied by such diagrams and maps as may be necessary" (pp. ix-x). Index starts on page 823.

Patent for "a simple and inexpensive advertising device adapted to be placed on street corners and other public places and capable of exciting the curiosity and attracting attention, and thereby directing the attention of persons to the advertisement" (lines 11-16).
Apparatus for Burning Garbage.
Patent for an apparatus for burning garbage that is made up of a roasting chamber, a grate to hold the garbage, two furnaces, a passage for the ashes, a third furnace connected to the passage, flues, a smokestack, non-combustible absorbent material around the flues and beneath the grate, and flues beneath the grate.
Bit for Well-Drilling Apparatus.
Patent for an expansion bit for a well-drilling apparatus that can be "adjusted and removed without without withdrawing the well tubing, and to provide means whereby a bit capable of drilling a hole sufficiently larger than the well tubing to accommodate a casing may be introduced through the tubing" (lines 11-16).
Bicycle.
Patent for a bicycle that can be operated by the operator's hands or feet or both, and the motion used to operate the bicycle is that of rowing. "the rider must assume a position upon the machine corresponding to that assumed by an oarsman in a boat, and as the rider can work with both hands and feet all the energy and strength he is capable of exerting can be brought to bear upon the propelling mechanism in a most effective manner, and the seat can be rendered much more comfortable than at present and in no wise interfere with the rider's movements" (lines 18-27).

Patent for an improved combined stalk cutter and rake that has a main frame, a rake frame, a hanger attached to the axle-bar under the frame, arms at the back of the frame, a transverse rod in the hanger and slots in the arms, a rock-lever, connections for operating the frame, a rake at the end of the frame, and an operating lever.
Baling-Press.
Patent for improvements in baling presses: "This invention relates to baling presses provided with runners, (instead of the usual wheels,) to be removed about the field; and my objects are, to construct such a press in such a manner that it can be readily started down with but few stakes, second; to provide a rigid but removable side brace to prevent the press from canting, and third; to prevent the operating lever from canting or swinging upward or downward when in operation; and to promote simplicity" (lines 17-27).
Breast for Cotton-Gins.
Patent for improvements in breasts for cotton gins: " My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of gin breasts for cotton gins and consists in providing in conjunction with a gin breast an adjustable "up-per circle" to facilitate the formation of the roll, to prevent the seed cotton from overflowing from the gin breast as the roll rotates, and preserve the proper degree of contact between the gin saws and the roll" (lines 12-20).
Combined Elevator, Cleaner, Distributer, and Feeder for Seed-Cotton.
Patent for a "simple and efficient apparatus for conveying seed-cotton from a wagon or other source of supply, to one or more gins or gin feeders, said apparatus being adapted, at the same time, to thoroughly clean the seed-cotton and to deliver it to the gins or feeders in the desired quantities in a uniform manner, and in loose and uncompacted condition" (lines 14-21).

Patent for an axle-box for vehicle wheels that "contains a lubricant-receiving recess from which the lubricant is automatically fed to the spindle of the axle as necessity may occasion" (lines 10-13).
Child's Seat for Vehicles.
Patent for a removable child's seat for buggies, phaetons, carriages, sleighs, and similar vehicles that folds up so it can be stored under the seat when not in use. The chair sits next to the dash, and is locked into place so the child is safe.
Apparatus for the Treatment of Cotton.
Patent for a machine that puts gins and condensers in a line, which sit over a flue. "The lint cotton in bat form being delivered from all of the condensers in independent bats to a common conveyer, the bat cotton increasing in thickness upon the common conveyer and in its travel to a press, compress or other receptacle, receiving the different bats from the different condensers, one bat lying smoothly upon the other, until at the discharge end of the common conveyer, the bat in which the lint is evenly distributed and which is of considerable thickness, will be conveniently discharged" (lines 13-24).
Car-Fender.
Patent for a simple car-fender that improves on the types of "fenders which are attached to the front end of street and other car trucks for the purpose of saving human life by preventing a body from being thrown under the car wheels" (lines 10-14). The invention does not let a body under the car wheels.
Car-Coupling.
Patent for an improved car-coupling that consists of a hollow drawhead, a knuckle pivoted in the drawhead, a lock that pivots across the drawhead, a catch on one side of the drawhead, a spring presses on the side of the lock, a lever pivoted in the drawhead, a hand rod connected to the arm, a hand rod connected to the drawhead, and a bell crank lever pivoted in the drawhead.
Attachment for Locomotives.
Patent for a safety attachment for locomotives that is simple and prevents unwelcome people from getting into a position to take control of the train. It consists of steam pipes with open jets connected with the boiler that go around the entrances of the cab, and the train engineer can turn a valve and make hot steam project across the entrances.
Churn.
Patent for a simple and durable churn that quickly makes butter. The butter is churned by pumping a lever, which is connected to a strap that is wrapped around a rod, the rod goes into the container holding the cream and has hoops attached to it inside the container, and the pumping action makes the hoops quickly move back and forth.
Baling-Press.
Patent for a baling-press for cotton and uses a compression chamber and a head or compressor block to compress the cotton. The invention is more effective and more expeditious than other baling-presses.
Combined Cotton and Corn Planter.
Patent for an improved combined corn and cotton planters that "effectively carr[ies] out the duplex functions of planters of this class, which will possess advantages in point of simplicity, durability, effectiveness, and general efficiency" (lines 11-14).
Cigar-Package.
Patent for an improved cigar-package that complies "with all the requirements of the revenue laws, to be retailed to purchasers, who destroy the stamp upon opening the package, the construction being such that the packages thus opened can be used as pocket cases for the protection of the cigars" (lines 21-27).
Car-Door.
Patent for "sliding doors for freight cars, stock cars, &c., in which the car door is suspended at its upper end by means of suitable hangers engaging a track or guide rail extended above and to one side of the door-way in such manner that the door, when unfastened, may be made to slide sidewise to give access to the interior of the car." Combined Vegetable Slicer and Grater.
Patent for a combined vegetable slicer and grater that consists of a main frame with vertical arms and bearings, a screw that attaches the arms to the frame, a shaft journaled with an annular flange into the bearings, a cylinder made of sheet metal that serves as knives, and spring tongues that regulate the thickness of the cut vegetables.
Anti-Oscillating Attachment for Street-Cars.
Patent for an improved anti-oscillating attachment for street-cars. It has a car truck, equalizing pivoting bars secured between the truck ends, cushions on either side of the bars, adjustable bolts that hold the bars in place, and springs between the bolts.
Car-Coupling.
Patent for a simple and efficient car coupling that easily couples by impact, and can uncouple without going between cars.
Clothes-Pounder.
Patent for an improved clothes washer that is made up of a cylinder, a piston that is two disks attached together with notches and flared edges, and a packing strip in the groove of the disk edges.
Automatic Railway-Gate.
Patent for an automatic railway-gate or cattle-guard for use "at crossings, the entrances to tunnels, bridges or trestles, or at other places where it is desirable to guard the tracks" (lines 11-13). The invention is a simple and effective way for closing gates, can be operated from a distance, and is controlled by the wheels of passing trains.
Book-Holder for Reading-Stands.
Patent for "a book holder especially designed to receive large books for reference, such as a dictionary for example, and to so construct the mechanism of the holder that a cradle will be provided for the reception of the book, which cradle will be adapted to be carried upward and outward from the holder in a manner which will bring the book in proper position for consultation, and which mechanism will also act to lower the book, without jar or injury to it, within the holder when the book is no longer required." Andiron.
Patent for a simple and inexpensive andiron that can easily be moved and holds the logs in place. "The invention consists of an andiron having two dogs or members connected together and a fender removably connected to the front of said dogs and extending over the intervening space or opening" (lines 9-14).
Combined Cotton Separator and Distributer.
Patent for a simple and efficient cotton separator and distributor that elevates and moves cotton from a wagon into a gin. It has supply and suction pipes, an air-tight cotton distributing box with an opening on one side and a gravity drop door on the other, a mechanism that moves the box in and out of the line of suction of the pipes, and a group of circular distributing boxes that rotate between the pipes.
Cattle-Guard.
Patent for a cattle-guard that improves on patents previously granted to the inventor (No. 516,307 and No. 501,785). The improvements include "the provision of a counter balance or lever with a weight slidingly thereon, which can be adjusted so as to better regulate the platform (lines 25-28) and perforated guards, which will not get as damaged by the wind as non-perforated guards. The patent also includes springs under the platform instead of springs under the sills.
Churn.
Patent for a simple, inexpensive, and effective combined churn motor and dasher that continuously and smoothly circulates cream. It has a large wheel the operator turns, which is connected through a series of pulleys to the dasher. A large frame holds the parts in place.
