In regards to the Latino Art and Culture exhibition being held at the Smithsonian Institution and how most of the teachers in the NTIEVA program are teaching at schools with a large percentage of Latino students. The teachers are having a problem finding quality materials associated with Latino artists and McCarter is interested in having the institute devote a portion of their time to the Latino Art and having Wyrick come to the Texas institute to introduce new instruction packages.

Discussing a planned a meeting for the art specialists and coordinators, such as Stephens, participating in the Institute, for Saturday May 19th, at 10:00 am, in office Room 302 of the Historical Building. At the meeting the art specialists will be responsible for presenting their commercial art packages to the Institute with the objective of promoting ways implementing art programs into existing curriculum.

Discussion that the Getty Center has an opportunity to highlight the regional institutes in the "Face of Philanthropy," a feature in The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The Chronicle became interested in features RIGs after reviewing their most recent press release. The Getty Center requests of the directors to send in photographs that meet strict requirements, as listed in the letter. The photos are required to show children involved in any DBAE art activity.

Mentioning a meeting, that Nasher chaired on, which energized the entire faculty and how disappointed McCarter is, because of scheduling conflicts, that Nasher will be unable to participate in the leadership retreat scheduled for June 1. McCarter also mentions literature that he forwarded to Nasher and hopes the he understands the enthusiasm for the concepts behind the NTIEVA's projects. McCarter then mentions that Dallas I.S.D. was unable to continue as a consortium district because of finalized details, yet McCarter hopes to reactivate Dallas after meeting with Howard Dunn and conversing with Janice Wiggins. McCarter ends the letter expressing concern about funding for the Institute. Copied on the letter is Rick Brettell.

Wiggins writes that Dallas ISD will be unable to continue their participation in the extension of the Getty grant for the 1995-1996 school years, due to time consideration and budgeting. However, there might be a possibility for participation for the 1997-1998 school year if they're able to pick up DISD's school funding needs. Wiggins concludes, saying how much she enjoyed her involvement with the NTIEVA consortium and to let them know of any opportunities to work with North Texas and the Getty Foundation again.

In regards to good news that the Amon Carter Foundation has granted NTIEVA $150,000 for the next three years of their program. McCarter and Davis are thrilled as this amount will go a long way towards meeting their five year matching requirement for the Getty grant. It also insure the ongoing work of the institute. Included in the letter are details about how the Getty grant will release their pay increments during the years. McCarter and Davis write that they need some materials from Roberts, discussing some points they've enclosed in the letter, in order to secure the grant with the Getty Center.

In regards to Eshom's assistance during the four day seminar. Reynolds writes that they have reserved the days of June 28 - July 1 and July 5 - 8, 1994 for Corpus Christi to discuss future seminars and the ways to best serve the teachers. Reynolds continues that Dr. William Otten is interested in bringing NTIEVA to speak at the Art Museum of South Texas, and that possibly Eshom can reach out to him to coordinate efforts. Enclosed with the letter are information Reynolds believes will be useful for Eshom. The attachments are, Fees for the Institute Presentations, Human Commonalities list, copy of NTIEVA's consortium members, and their list of goals.

In discussion of the articles in Spirit that focus on activities in the area that Southwest Airline serves and they thought that Clark would be interested in the discipline-based art education, DBAE implementation project. Davis and McCarter go into further details about what North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts does for educators and the districts in the Texas state as well as where their funding and grants come from. Davis and McCarter write about the success their institute is having with the children and how their reading and writing have improved with the visual art program. Attached to the letter for Clark, they've added more information regarding their program and hoping Clark will be able to feature an article about it.

Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter and Jack Davis, co-directors of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to John Biggers. In regards to a project which the NTIEVA initiated, that sought out high quality reproductions of work of at in five museums in the DFW area and that one of Bigger's painting, "Starry Clown" was selected for the portfolio. NTIEVA, with the Marcus Grant, produced 500 portfolios and each was placed at no cost in the elementary and secondary schools in the consortium of the Institute. McCarter and Davis write that the portfolio has been successful with teachers and students, that they received requests for additional portfolios, and are reaching out to Biggers to request the use of the image in commercial production of future portfolios.
