Description: Photograph of Brave Combo playing at the Union, Carl Finch (left) and Barnes (right) entertain students outside of the third union building, 1985. Carl Finch started the band Brave Combo in 1979, the same year he completed his M.F.A. at North Texas. A mainstay of the Texas music scene today, Brave Combo’s sound is often described as “polka” or “world music” and combines influences ranging from Polish American polka to Zydeco.

[Sweet Estes hugging her dog]

Description: Photograph of Sweet Estes hugging her dog, Thor, while standing outside of her stable. Miss Estes owned and operated three barns in and around the Denton area starting in 1961, one of which was located behind Chilton Hall, on campus. She charged $0.25 an hour for riding lessons, eventually earning enough money to put her and her sister through college. During her career, she became the North Texas physical education instructor where she taught badminton and conditioning training.
