Phelps's National Map of the United States, a Travellers' Guide

Description: Hand-drawn color map showing the eastern half of the United States, including railroads, canals, steamboat and stage routes. The border of the map has state seals and drawings of some U.S. presidents. Geographic features are noted, with relief shown by hachures. Includes two insets in the lower right corner: Southern part of Florida -- Map of Oregon, California & Texas; as well as one inset near the upper right corner of the N. Part of Maine.

The runaway

Description: Little Julia, resident of New York City, is taken to see her uncle's farm. Exposed to fields, animals, and the open spaces, she regrets having to return to the city. Back home, she wants to run away and return to her uncle's farm. Against her mother's orders, she does run away one day, but is found and brought home, and learns never to disobey her mother again.

[Letter from Maud C. Fentress to David Fentress, October 26, 1859]

Description: Letter from Maud C. Fentress to her son, David Fentress inquiring about the purchase of a Mare and discussing the travel arrangements of his Uncle. She mentions that his uncle is ill, and also inquires about his housing accommodations, in case she should decide to come visit him. Towards the end of the letter she mentions that she is making dresses for a baby and sleeves for David's wife, Clara.
