Accessing the Inaccessible: Capturing and Re-Purposing Metadata Prior to Digitization to Ensure Adequate Description and Access
Presented at the 2018 Texas Conference on Digital Libraries. This presentation provides a detailed look at how University of North Texas Libraries' Special Collections embarked upon a large-scale digitization project involving a portion of the highly requested A/V materials from the NBC-5/KXAS Television News collection, using a third-party vendor. This project included the use of snapshots to help repurpose metadata, then linked data tools in Excel and WikiMedia to create access to tape content titles.
The digitisation and commercial licensing of local television news as a model for preservation and access: A case study
Article looks at the history of the NBC5 news collection maintained by the Special Collections Department of the University of North Texas Libraries. It examines the workflows required to prepare film and video for digitisation, perform quality control on digital files, and apply metadata keywords and content description to make footage easier for filmmakers to discover online. The paper will also discuss the licensing workflows in place at UNTL and how footage has been licensed for use in a variety of projects.
Exhibiting Regional LGBTQ History in Dallas, Texas
Article on the efforts of the University of North Texas Special Collections to create exhibits featuring LGBTQ history in Dallas, Texas. From 2017 to 2019 archivists and librarians at the University of North Texas Special Collections have worked with community members and city officials to create exhibits featuring archival materials from the LGBTQ Archive. There have been several obstacles to presenting accurate historical interpretation of Dallas LGBTQ community history, including lack of sufficient archival documentation, and differences between archival sources and community members’ personal experiences. Grappling with these challenges has allowed UNT Special Collections archivists and librarians to engage community members in a personal, meaningful discussion, and ultimately have led to both successful exhibits as well as strengthened relationships to LGBTQ community members.
