The rectangular metal plaque is mounted on a white stone slab, and is personalized with the name Gordon R. Carpenter. The Century Club was announced in late 1973, with the official campaign beginning in July 1974. The first member to donated the required $100 would be Dr. Nolen himself, being unexpectedly offered the opportunity by Murphy Martin, Century Club Chairman, in front of 300 attendees at the spring 1974 Alumni Awards Luncheon. Gordon R. Carpenter (North Texas State Teachers College class of 1940) was at the time the President of the Alumni Association and Chairman of the Development Board.

Murphy Martin (attended North Texas State Teachers College 1945-1948), an anchorman at the WEAA tv station, was Master of Ceremonies for the luncheon, and assisted President Nolen in handing out awards. As chairman of the Alumni Association Century Club, he spoke of the new fund-raising group to the gathering, and then in front of the assembled alumni asked President Nolen if he would like to be the first member. President Nolen agreed, and gave Martin a check. Seated at right is June Gregg Nolen.

Photograph of the Administration Building and McConnell Memorial Tower. Looking from the north-west to the south-east, the view shows the main/front facade on the north side and the west end. The Administration Building was constructed in 1956, and in 2002 was renamed the Hurley Administration Building in honor of retiring Chancellor and former President of UNT Dr. Alfred F. Hurley. In this photograph, the clock tower, which was named the McConnell Memorial Tower in honor of W. Joseph McConnell, President of North Texas State Teachers College from 1934 to 1951, has a clock face visible on the north and west sides. The east, south, and west clock faces were not installed until May 1974, dating this image to after 1974. Most likely taken in late 1970s or early 1980s.
