A female figure representing Marianne is accompanied by a wounded soldier. They collect for the Red Cross. Marianne is dressed in a style to suggest the French Revolution, wearing a blue, white, and red skirt, a uniform jacket worn as a cape, and a long blue and red cap. She holds a Red Cross collecting tin in one hand and a small blue, white, and red keg under her other arm. She guides a wounded soldier, his head bandaged. He has one arm on Marianne’s shoulder, and the other holds a cane. The soldier wears a medal pinned to his coat, a cap with an inscribed band, and is smoking.

A single volume containing two libretti for which the music (not present) was composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully. This small publication was sold as an aid to viewers of the works, so that they could follow along with the libretti during the performance.
Le tableau parlant: comédie-parade, en un acte et en vers
This is a 1773 printed copy of the libretto of "Le tableau parlant" (The talking picture), a one-act comic opera by M. Anseaume, set to music by Grétry. The opera was staged for the first time by the troupe of Italian actors of King Louis XV, on Wednesday, September 20, 1769. The back of the t.p. lists the names of the original actors who performed the characters of the opera at its premier: Isabelle (Madame Trial), [Jean-Louis Laruette] (Cassandre, Isabelle's tutor), [Madame Laruette (Colombine, Isabelle's lady-in-waiting), M. Trial (Léandre, Cassandra's nephew, who is in love with Isabelle), and [[Jean-Baptiste Clairval] (Léandre's valet). The final scene is a vaudeville sung by all of the characters. The music of the vaudeville is included at the end on pp. [45-48]. The library's copy of the libretto is bound with the libretto of Jean François Marmontel's comic opera "La fausse magie."
La fausse magie
This is a ca. [1775] printed copy of the libretto of "La fausse magie" (The false magic), a two-act comic opera by Jean François Marmontel, set to music by Grétry. [The opera was staged for the first time at the Théâtre Français à La Haye, on Thursday, November 30, 1775.] The final scene of act two contains the music of the couplets on pp. 47-48. The library's copy of the libretto is bound with the libretto of M. Anseaume's comic opera, "Le tableau parlant."

A group of attendees visited the archives on the first day of the 49th annual CSLA conference that was held at Kent State University from June 27-29 in 2016.

[Henri Matisse, Jazz]
Photographs of Henri Matisse's "Jazz", held by UNT Special Collections. Jazz is a series of works by artist Henri Matisse, which shows circus scenes cut out of colored paper. This is the first example of Matisse working in this way, which would eventually be his main method of creating art. The cover contains the title in pink lettering, and one of his works on the right with different blocks of color. Image 2, the page shown is titled “Nightmare of the White Elephant” and shows a circus elephant performing a trick. Matisse described the elephant as dreaming of his long-lost childhood in the jungle, with the red flames symbolizing his anguish.

Image 2, inscription on inside of cover written in pencil. On the left page is a stamped design. This image in Echoes from France by Amy Robbins Ware, an American nurse in France during WWI, demonstrates the kind of tensions generated by the coexistence of photographs and text. Image 3, pages 40 and 41. The page on the left has a black and white photo of a woman in a dress and gas mask, the page on the right a poem titled "J'attends, C'est la Guerre." Although the book contains no photographs of abject gore, it does feature this photo of a woman with a gas mask as a haunting reminder of such horror and an effacement of the familiar, such that the woman now wears the large dark eyes and proboscis reminiscent of insect life. The text at the bottom works against the tone of estrangement by way of the domesticating rhetoric of “little tin derby” in the place of “helmet.” The diminutive qualifier is not supported by the photo and so suggests a note of endearment and thereby emotional mastery. Similarly the poem to the left of the photograph turns its focus from the destructive power of the “Gothas,” the heavy bombers of the German Luftstreitkräfte, to “Life’s great adventure” and nostalgic invocations, however fleeting their comforts. Whereas the reassurance of a human face, no less real than the uniform before us, lies beneath the mask in the photograph, the terror of war lies beneath the rhetorical surface of the poem, whose imagistic force is for the most part diffused by familiarity of diction and detail.
