[Booklet: Annie Webb Blanton of Denton for the thirteenth congressional district]
Annie Webb Blanton (1870-1945) was an American suffragist, educator, and author of a series of grammar textbooks. Blanton was elected Superintendent of Texas Public Instruction in 1918, making her the first woman in Texas elected to statewide office. She was born in Houston and at 18 moved to Austin to attend classes at the University of Texas where she graduated in 1899 with a Bachelors of Literature. In 1901, Dr. Blanton began teaching English at North Texas Normal School in Denton, Texas where she remained for 17 years. The school is part of the now University of North Texas.
