He served as an aerial photographer with the 2nd Observation Squadron. They were stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded the Philippines. Real participated in the Bataan Death March and survived as a prisoner of war at Camp O’Donnell and Cabanatuan. He was liberated in early 1945, and discharged in May of 1946.
