Knickerbocker acknowledges the receipt of the letter of June 24, 1943 from Carswell and expresses his appreciation regarding Carswell's conclusion of the effective manner in which the State Guard handled the disturbances in Beaumont. Knickerbocker advises of their pride in the expedition and efficiency with which the State Guard took over both before and after Martial Law was declared.
A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell ("Tommy"), Abilene, Texas, from J. D. Sandefer, Jr. ("Jake"), Breckenridge, Texas dated June 1, 1943. Sandefer expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell knowing that some of his efforts as Chairman of the Board have been appreciated. He advises of his recent effort to obtain an armed services setup on the campus, the resignation of Dr. White as president of HSU and touches on a past discussion regarding allowing the Executive Committee to frame the policies stating, again, that his chairmanship was not perfect but that he did his best. Sandefer advises that Carswell was asked after by everyone at the Easter Service and offers his sympathy regarding Truett's death [E. Truett Compere].
A letter written to Mr. Tom Carswell, Fifth Division Abilene, Texas, from J. M. Willson, Floydada, Texas, dated June 18, 1943. Willson advises of his not being able to make the Division meeting but that he will make the Fort Worth meeting then on to Omaha Nebraska. He emphasizes the importance of Carswell to endorse George Berry and Sam Forman at the Division meeting.
A letter written to the State Director of Selective Service, Austin, Texas from Floyd County Local Board, J. M. Willson, Chairman, Floydada, Texas, dated June 5, 1943. Willson makes a request for a waiver on a registrant classified 1-A by the Floyd County Board citing his dishonorable discharge from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, December 16, 1941. Handwritten notation advising of no answer and dated September 25, 1944.
A letter written to T. N. Carswell, from Jeff Davis, Executive Secretary, United Texas Drys, dated June 17, 1943. Davis advises Carswell that the Executive Committee, composed of George Sargeant, Edgar P. Haney, and Dr. Julian Atwood, informed him that they were impressed with Carswell as Davis' logical successor and that Dr. Francis A. Buddin would be contacting him. Notation at bottom of page advises of Carswell having answered on June 27, 1943.
A form letter addressed to All Posts, 17th District, from W. J. Wisdom, 17th District Commander, The American Legion, Stephenville, Texas, dated June 14, 1943. Wisdom advises of his decision to leave his command at the American Legion to report to the United Service Organization, wanting to get into the Army, but that this will be as close as he gets. He refers to the vacant room of his lad of eighteen, just like the countless other vacant rooms throughout the land and makes the appeal, "I urge, implore and beg of you to be about our country's business, and be the kind of American those absent boys expect you to be."
A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from W. J. Wisdom, Asst. Director, United Service Organizations, Inc., Houston, Texas, dated June 23, 1943. Wisdom expresses his appreciation for Carswell's "gracious" letter regarding his finding an opportunity to offer his services "to our boys" advising that he will train in N. Y. then be reassigned. Requests of Carswell to give his regards to the "old 17th".
A memorandum from L. M. Fellbaum, Major, Q. M. C., Policy Supervisor to Mr. T. N. Carswell dated June 9, 1943. Fellbaum instructs Carswell regarding itinerary additions for Tom Green County Local Board No. 2 instructing Carswell to visit that board between his work at Irion and Concho Counties. Fellbaum adds a handwritten note complimenting the average number of reports by Carswell as 200% and to keep up the good work.
