According to the article, Herrera was part of the Sons of the Republic of Texas due to his relation to "Pedro Herrera, who fought at San Jacinto, Blas Herrera of Bear County in San Antonio, who was a scout for Sam Houston, and Fransisco Ruiz, alcalde (mayor) of San Antonio during the Texas Revolution, and one of the two native Texas who signed the declaration of Independence."
