About the Collection
Published in Galveston 1871 - 1872 by Richard Nelson, this Texas newspaper was the first published by an African-American proprietor/editor. Born free in Florida, Nelson was an influential politician and journalist, active from 1866 to his death in 1914. In its pages, the paper advertised "It will advocate the rights of all American citizens, 'without regard to color, race, or previous condition of servitude.'"
