The Wilbert Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel Photograph Collection
History
This collection consists of photographs of Wilbert Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel, a radio show host, Texas governor from 1938-1941 and US Senator in the 1940s. When he ran for the United States Senate, and he defeated Lyndon Johnson by 1,311 votes. O’Daniel was also the only person to have defeated Lyndon Johnson in an election. He was best known for his Populist views and vaudeville-hillbilly image, all of which are portrayed in these images.
About the Collection
The collection includes photographs of his various campaigns, his inauguration, hunting trips, and his family, as well as six of the Capitol and interior of the Governor’s Mansion. These photographs paint the complete picture of O’Daniel’s terms and Texas political history and personality.
