In 1942, he flew PBY Catalinas with Patrol Squadron 23, a Black Cat Squadron. They were assigned to Midway, participating in patrols searching for the Japanese invasion force. After basic training, he headed for Little Creek, Virginia, for amphibious training. After that, he was assigned to USS LSM-96.
