Officers to train in March
at West Central Academy
By TAMMY FIELDER
Optimist Staff
Four ACU security officers will begin a
basic law enforcement certification course
in March at the West Central Texas Law
Enforcement Academy
Bill King a freshman from Mineral Wells;
Robert Taylor a freshman from Bronte
Robert Nickolson a junior transfer from
Southeastern State University in
Oklahoma ; and Roy Jones who will begin
postgraduate work in June will attend the
42-day training course.
Bert Lana director of security said he
thinks this training will strengthen ACU s
campus security force.
After completing the course the men wiU
be able to serve on any peace officer force
that does not require specialized training.
Lana said they also can work on police
forces or serve as county sheriff or sheriff's
deputies in many places
The 338-hour course will be given March 16
through May 12 at the West Texas Council of
Government administration office in
Abilene.
While attending the certification school
the four ACU officers will take night courses
in law enforcement at Hardin-Simmons
University work on the security force and
possibly take some courses at ACU. Lana
said the men would work shorter shifts
during this time.
Lana also said the four officers who will
take the course are planning to go into law
enforcement in some way when they
complete school.
"These are the men who work at night"
he said "and they need to know the law
better in order to better protect the student
body. I'm really encouraged that we're
getting more and more law enforcement
majors on our force because my main
concern is to protect the students and the
physical equipment."
Nickolson and Jones were added to the
staff at the beginning of the semester. They
replaced Buddy Compton and Ray Wheeler
who were on the staff last semester. Comp-
ton returned to Arkansas with his family
and Wheeler moved to Burleson
Lana said the security department now
has 13 members and they cover the campus
24 hours a day.
