Science teachers to meet at HSU in 1982
Hardin-Simmons University has
been selected as host for the 29th
annual Conference for the Ad-
vancement of Science Teachers
Nov. 4-6 1982.
Approximately 1200 high school
science teachers are expected to
come to Abilene for the three-day
event "and we'll pretty much tie
up every classroom on the HSU
campus" Dr. Charles Robinson
director of institutional research at
HSU said in making the announce-
ment. The executive committee of
CAST met at HSU in early Septem-
ber but Robinson didn't receive of-
ficial communication on HSU
selection until last week. "The
committee took a look at our facili-
ties and liked what they saw" he
said. "We're pleased for several
reasons including the fact that the
conference is usually held at larger
schools."
The 1980 CAST meeting is next
month at the University of Texas at
El Paso while the two prior confer-
ences were at Baylor University
(1979) and Texas A & M (1978). Next
year the group will meet at the
University of Texas at Arlington.

"This conference is comparable
to national conventions of science
teachers as far as the number of
participants number of exhibitors
(of science equipment and text-
books) and the quality of the pro-
gram" Robinson said.
Local coordination for the event
will be handled by Robinson and
Dr. Eva Lee Cralk and Dr. Susan
Helms (HSU's science education
specialists) and Dr. York Clamann.
science consultant for the Abilene
Independent School District.
"The Abilene Convention and
Visitors Bureau did an outstanding
job in selling the CAST executive
committee on coming here"
Robinson pointed out.
If the format of the 1982 meeting
follows the format of the past con-
ferences there will be three
general sessions with distinguish-
ed scientists speaking at each ses
sion; six concurrent sessions in
the major divisions of interest
(biology geology earth sciences
and environmental sciences) two
symposia (one for elementary
school teachers and one for secon-
dary school teachers) and approx-
imately 80 workshops.
Also about 50 exhibitors of
science education materials are
expected to attend the conference.

Reagan wins campus straw vote
When the Texas branch and the
New Mexico branch of the Ameri-
can Society for Microbiology met
in El Paso last Friday for a joint
meeting they let Hardin-Simmons
University get things started.
Personnel from the HSU Science
Research Center presented the
second and third papers in the
ClinicalMedical Microbiology Ses-
sion and the first paper in the
Medical Microbiology Session
which ran concurrently.
R. Carroll Casey and Dr. Terry L.
Foster spoke at 8:15 a.m. in the
clinicalmedical session on "A
Sensitive Colorometrlc Assay For
Penicillin." Dr. John Brewer direc-
tor of the Science Research
Center followed his co-workers
immediately with a paper on
"Evaluation of the Gas Pak II
Hydrogen Carbon Dioxide
Generator for Anaerobic Micro-
biology." The Gas Pak II is another
in a lengthy list of inventions by Dr.
Brewer that have been vital to
microbiology research.
Meanwhile in another audito-
rium Luther Winans Jr. was ex-
plaining the HSU research center's
work on "The Effect of Lac-
tobacillus Preparations on the Ac
tivity of Various Bacterial Toxins."

If the presidential straw vote
taken at Hardin-Simmons Univer-
sity last week is any indication of
things to come then Ronald
Reagan doesn't have much to
worry about.
Out of a total 711 votes regis-
tered by HSU faculty staff and
students Reagan received 447
votes with President Carter trailing
in with 192 John Anderson with 29
and Other with 43. Approximately
30 percent of the HSUers voted out
of a total of 2289 students and
employees.
Sponsored by the HSU Law and
Politics Club the ballot system
was set up in Moody Center lobby
from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. where persons
could register to vote by signing
their names on a list.
Club sponsor Dr. Virginia Arm-
strong associate professor in
political science said that club
members tried to educate the
public before registering their
votes. "We hope that these votes
are more valid since we got infor-

Dr. Armstrong mentioned the
Law and Politics Club debate Oct.
21 where candidates representing
the Reagan-Bush and Carter-
Mondale tickets presented the
RepublicanDemocrat viewpoints.
The club members distributed
printed material on party platforms
and the candidates' positions on
key issues Armstrong said before
the straw vote was taken.
