Two New Teachers
To Join H-SU Faculty
(Two new teachers will join the
Hardin-Simmons University eco-
nomics faculty for the 1967-68
school year Dr. Elwin L. Skiles
president and Dr. Zane A. Mason
acting dean said Friday.
They are George Housewright
who is completing requirements
for the Ph.D. degree in economics
at the University of Arkansas
and James R. Vinson who expects
to complete requirements for a
decorate at ithe University of
Houston in August.
Also announced Friday was the
resignation of Chester Parks as-
sistant professor of strings and
music education since 1965. He
will go to Arizona Western Col-
lege in Yuma Ariz. and his resig
nation is effective June 1. Parks
former orchestra director at
Cooper High School will join Dr.
Carroll D. Carruth at the Arizona
college. Dr. Carruth is a former
dean of the School of Music here.
Housewright is a 1952 graduate
of Abilene High School. He holds
the bachelor of business adminis-
tration degree from North Texas
State University and the master
of arts in economics and busi-

Earns Scholarship
Miss Mabel Wilioughby Har
din-Simmons University library
director has been notified that
she has been awarded a Full-bright-Hays
Scholarship to lec-
ture in library administration at
Pahlavi University Pahlavi Iran.
Miss Wilioughby applied for
the grant about two years ago.
She has been doing research on
the status of women in Jordan
which is also in the Middle East.
Miss Wilioughby has not made
any detailed plans as of yet con-
cerning her trip.

Five Abilene professionals in
communications will participate
with other Texas speakers in the
first annual Abilene Intercol-
legiate Press Club communica-
tions workshop to be hosted by
Hardin-Simmons University Sat-
urday March 18.
They include: Katharyn Duff of
the Abilene Reporter-News; Wal-
ter Burch of Fidelity Advertising;
Charlie Marler of Abilene Chris-
tian College; Bill Fox of KRBC
Radio and Louis Green of Green
Advertising.
Students from West Texas
colleges and Abilene high schools
are invited to attend the work-
shop which will cover radio tele-
vision newspaper yearbook
photography and magazine ma-
terial. 'Pago One' Spoakor
Katharyn Duff 'assistant edi-
tor of the (Reporter-News and
regular front page columnist will
lead a 9:30 a. m. session entitled
"A Column That Identifies." Miss
Duff is author of "Page One" a
regular column feature of the
Reporter-News and is a graduate
of Hardin-Simmons University.

Music of Alumni Featured
On Spring Music Festival
The music of nine Hardin-Simmons
alumni will be featured on
the Jubilee Music Festival to be
held next Monday and Tuesday
nights in the Chapel-Auditorium.
The concerts including band
choir soloists and small en-
sembles will take place at 8 p. m.
All students faculty and off-
campus people are cordially in-
vited to the Festival according
to the School of Music.
According to Miss Mary Truly
instructor in voice and theory and
chairman of the Festival Commit-
tee the nine composers whose
music will be performed are
"among the 258 graduates of the
School of Music who have dis-
tinguished themselves in the
fields of public school music col-
lege teaching church music per-
formance and in the case of this
Festival composition."
'Representative' Group
Edward Hamilton acting dean
of the school of music said "In
co-operation with the University's
Jubilee celebration the School
of Music honors all its alumni by
presenting the works of nine rep-
resentative graduate composers.
The H-SU graduates who will
be honored include: T. W. Dean
professor of theory and composi
tion and chairman of graduate
music studies at the Southwest-
ern Baptist Theological Seminary;
William Boehle chairman of the
music department at the Univer-
sity of North Dakota; Paul
Holmes member of the music
faculty Lamar State College;
Hermon Warford assistant pro-
fessor of piano and theory at New
Orleans Baptist Theological Semi-
nary. On McMurry Faculty
Others are: Macon Sumerlin
member of the McMurry music
faculty; George Gates percussion
instructor at Louisiana Polytech-
nic Institute; Francis McBeth
chairman of the music depart-
ment Ouachita Baptist Univer-
sity; Miss Truly; and Bryan Shel-
Host Journalism Workshop
discussed at 9:30 a. m. by Walter
Burch vice president for public
relations of Fidelity Advertising
Agency of Abilene. Burch will
also lead a discussion at 10:30 a.
m. on "Editorials with' Impact."
Burch received his masters
degree in journalism from Colum-
bia University and has worked
on the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
and the Abilene Reporter-News.
For 10 years Burch served Abi-
lene Christian College in Public
Relations and Development and
is campaign consultant for the
expansion program at ACC.
Sports Jargon
Charlie Marler director of Pub-
lic Information and Publications
at ACC will cover the area of
sports jargon at 10:30 a. m. Mar-
ler also an instructor in journal-
ism was sports publicity director
until 1964 He served as pub-
licity director for the Pecan
Bowl 1964-65 and for Business
Aid.
Marler is a member of the
United States Basketball Writers
and Football Writers of America.
He is a graduate of ACC majoring
in English.
Bill .Fox manager of KRBC
burne graduate assistant at
Arizona State University.
Dr. Dean (B.A. and B.M. 1940)
who earned his doctorate at the
University of Southern California
has written a cantata especially
for the Festival. "Pax Vobis"
will feature the University Con-
cert Choir with a student-faculty
orchestra under the direction of
Edward Hamilton. The selection
includes a baritone solo to be
sung by Jack Coldiron of the
Southwestern Seminary music
faculty. (See story page 3.)
A 1941 graduate of H-SU with
a Bachelor of Music degree Dr.
Boehle has studied with Vincent
Persichetti and the late German
composer Paul Hindemith. He
has had over seventy perform-
ances of his works.
1947 Graduate
Holmes who graduated in 1947
with a B.M. degree has publish-
ed works for band orchestra
soloists and small ensembles in-
cluding brass. The National Sym-
phony Orchestra of Washington
D. C and the Houston Symphony
have performed several of his or-
chestral works.
A candidate for the Ph.D. de-
gree from North Texas State Uni-
versity Warford taught piano at
H-SU in 1956 and at McMurry in i
1965. He received his B.M. in
1955 and is a 1956 Master of
Music graduate.
Macon Sumerlin is an Abilene
composer. (See feature story
page 3.) George Gates (B.M.
1954) is the owner of Gates Music
Store in Monroe La. "Mosaico"
a work for band was recently
performed at the Four State
Bandmasters convention held in
Texarkana.
While at Eastman School of
Music in Rochester N. Y. Fran-
cis McBeth won the Howard Han-
son (a noted American composer)
Prize for his Third Symphony.
He has also written orchestra
band vocal and chamber music.
The most recent graduate
Radio and Louise Green owner
of Green Advertising Agency
will conduct career series in their
fields. They will expand upon
the job opportunities open to col-
lege graduates and local or West
Texas opportunities in the field.
Radio Graduate
Fox is a graduate of the In-
stitute of Radio and TV Broad-
casting in Dallas. He began his
career at KSTA in Coleman and
moved to KRBC radio where he
is presently president and general
manager in 1952.
Mrs. Green owner and man-
ager of Green Advertising
Agency began her career at
KRBC-TV where she became di-
rector of continuity. She is pres-
ently lecturer and book reviewer
for National Pen Women and the
International Platform Associa-
tion. A complete workshop in col-
lege yearbooks will be conduct-
ed by a representative from Tay-
lor Publishing Company of
Dallas publisher of all three col-
lege yearbooks. Ted Workman
Advertising Agency of Dallas is
organizing a team of advertisers
whose music will be performed
is Bryan Shelburne (B.M. 1965)
who is a graduate assistant and
instructor in brass at Arizona
State University. While at H-SU
Shelburne played in the Cowboy
and Concert Bands the Brass En-
semble and the ROTC band.
'The Deputy
Miss Truly who holds a 1962
bachelor of music degree from
H-SU and a master of music de-
gree from Florida State Univer-
sity is an instructor in music
theory and piano at H-SU. She
wrote the music for "The Deputy"
the H-SU Theater's production
last spring.
Performing on the festival will
be numerous vocal and instru-
mental soloists as well as the fol-
lowing groups: the Concert Band
under the direction of Marion B.
McClure; the Concert Choir di-
rected by Edward Hamilton; the
University Brass Ensemble Ron-
ald Henderson director; and the
Chamber Singers directed by
Mrs. Pattye Johnstone. (A speech
choir from the H-SU speech de-
partment will perform with the
Singers).
Other Groups
Additional groups include: the
Madrigal Singers under the direc-
tion of Mrs. Grace Morrow; and
the Woodwind Ensemble directed
by Mrs. Martha Boggs. Other accompanying-ensembles
will also
perform.
"Pax Vobis'' will use the Junior
Girls' Choir of the First Baptist
Church in addition to the orches-
tra choir and soloist. Bob Bur-
roughs minister of music at First
Baptist has been rehearsing and
directing the girls' group.
Dr. Dean Paul Holmes Fran-
cis McBeth and Macon Sumerlin
are expected to be in the audi-
ence during the Festival. Mc-
Beth and Holmes will direct their
works to be performed by the
Concert Band.
to conduct a two hour presenta-
tion featuring films leotures and
examples of good advertising.
The four star agency was secured
in connection with the Abilene
Ad Club.

with a dinner lecture at 6:30 p. m.
in the Steakley Room of the
Hardin-Simmons Student Center.
Registration will begin at 8:30
a. m. Saturday March 18 in the
student center lobby. Dinner
tickets will be on sale for $1.75.
