for tuition general fees
By LANNY MULLINS
Optimist Stafl
An increase in tuition and
general fees of $10 per semester
hour was approved Monda by
the ACU Board of Trustees
The increase was approved to
help meet a record setting budget
of $17339899 for the 1980 81 fiscal
year
Tuition and fees will provide
about $9 million of the budget
with the remainder coming from
donations the endowment and
revenue from auxiliary en-
terprises such as the cafeteria
and the bookstore
With the increase in tuition
from $55 per semester hour to $03
and a $2 increase in fees the
average student will have to pa
approximately $300 more per
year Students also will pa $120
more per year for room and
board an increase of about 10
percent
President John C Stevqns said
that the increase is caused by the
upward spiral of inflation in the
country
"We have not been able to hold
up against the high cost of
operating a college campus" he
said "For example next ear
will be the first year that our
expenditures for utilities
electricity gas and water will
be in excess of $1 million for one
year
"Other colleges and univer-
sities which we respect highly
such as Baylor Harding and
others have also had to raise
tuition anywhere from $5 to $10
The athletic department is
planning a Wall of Fame said
Wallv Bullington ACU athletic
director It will picture ever
athlete that has plaved for the
school
He also said plans are being
made for a group of alumni to
attend the ACU football game

Mann said they hoped to have
the 52 page magazine available
in August Although no price has
been set she said it would sell for
about $2
"It will be a er people
oriented magazine" she said
"with a lot of nostalgia and a lot
of history '
per semester hour" Stevens
said
"When this administration took
office in 1909" he said ' we
voiced our commitment to not
raise tuition at all When we saw
that inflation was not a tem-
porary thing we tried to keep all
necessary increases as low as
possible We feel that we have
been successful in this effort and
pledge to continue the trend in
every way possible "
Don Drcnnan assistant to the
president said that tuition was
raised $2 each ear in 1970 and
1971 $3 each ear in 1976 through
1978 and $5 in 1979 No increases
were recorded between 1972 and
1975
Drennan said that the record
setting budget for next year in
eludes many new items that last
year's budget did not In the
proposed budget are ex-
penditures for such things as new
academic equipment an in
crease in the salary budget to $7 9
million and an increase in the
travel budgets for various
departments in order to keep up
with the rising cost of gasoline
Also included is the cost of the
self study of the school that will
be administered next year
A self study is required ever
10 years by the Southern
Association of Colleges and
Universities for reaccreditation
into the association
A review of the operating
proceedures of the school and its
academic foundations are in-
cluded in the study
The association requires
studies to assure that each of its
members is able to provide
students with a quality education
Besides approving the budget
and several academic recom-
mendations the A4 member
Board also renewed the ap
pointments of some of its own
officers and members
