IREDELL
C19
Main Street, Iredell-1907
The first settlers to come to the area which
was to be Iredell (1849-1850) were the Dixon
(Manse) Walker and Bearcroft families.
Walker was the first and the branch or creek
named for him still is the Walker Branch.
Walker was one of the first Master Masons
of Meridian Lodge (later Iredell), and in
1860, he was Lieutenant in Command of
Bosque County Rangers.
One of the first tragedies in Iredell's
history was the killing of Peter Cartwright
Johnson of Brown County in late 1857 by
Comanche Indians near what was then
known as Meridian Peak. Mr. Johnson and
his twelve year old son were returning home
in an ox wagon loaded with flour, meal, and
other supplies when they were attacked. The
boy was captured but escaped to tell about
the ordeal. Ever since this peak which is
about three miles south of Iredell on the
Spring Creek Road has been known as
Johnson's Peak. It is a well known landmark
and during World War II soldiers manned a
communications base on the adjoining moun-
tain.
On March 20, 1838 there was an agreement
between Delilah Boren Hutson McCullough,
widow of James A. McCullough, and Wilson
Y. McFarland for 1/3 of a league and 1/2 of
one labor of land. Delilah was trying to get
one league and one labor of land which was
James A.'s headright as a colonist. The Board
of Land Commissioners for Robertson
County, Republic of Texas, refused to grant
the whole amount but granted her a certifi-
cate for 1/3 of a league. McFarland thought
he was entitled to one league and one labor
and Delilah agreed to execute a deed to him
for 1/2 of the disputed land due James A. if
he (McFarland) would procure a certificate
for said land. It was agreed both could have
land fronting the river and Delilah would
keep all improvements which she had made.
This seems to be the beginning of a dispute
over this land which lasted into the late
1870's when F.H. Austin of Bell County was
administrator for the estate of W.Y. McFar-
land, deceased.
Abstract of Titles show the original grant
of land which was to contain the city of Iredell
was made by the State of Texas to the heirs
of James A. McCullough, deceased, by patent
no. 394 dated May 10, 1849 as 17 2/3 labors
