Daniel Emerson Orbeck was born in 1921,
in Clifton to parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto C.
Orbeck. He was the fourth child born to this
family of four boys and one girl, which
included Evelyn, Joseph Milton, David Lloyd
and James Stanley. His grandfather, Captain
A.N. Orbeck, sea captain, immigrated from
Norway in 1917 and lived with the family
until his death in 1932. Dan's uncle, Carsten
A. Orbeck, lived at the family home for aperiod of time also. When Dan was two years
of age the family moved to 415 North Avenue
I in Clifton which was on the edge of town.
Dan attended the Clifton Schools, graduat-
ing in 1939 and entered Clifton Jr. College in
the fall. He later attended a business school
in Houston. He enlisted in the Army Air
Corps in 1942, trained as a pilot and flew C-
47s during World War II. He was stationed
in England, France, and Italy until his
discharge in 1945.
Dan was baptized and confirmed at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Clifton, where he contin-
ues his membership.
Returning from the war in 1945, Dan went
to work at the family-owned store, the Clifton
Mercantile Company, which his father pur-
chased in 1915. He worked there serving as
president of the company until 1979 when the
store was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Al Herzog.
Dan married Mary Catheryn Colwick in
1945 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at
Norse. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

married in the same church, Our Savior's
Lutheran Church at Norse.

Public School in 1939 where she graduated
in 1945. That same year she enrolled at

September and married in December.
Three children were born to this couple,
Ma:ry Dianne, 1948, Dale Christine, 1950 and
Daniel Emerson Jr., 1957.

activities and has enjoyed the involvement it
offers. Trinity Lutheran Church has been
their church home since they married.
She has been president of the Bosque
Memorial Museum Board for a number of
years and was especially honored when King
Olav V of Norway visited the Noise-Clifton
area and made a stop at the Museum in 1982.
Mary worked part-time when her youngest
child entered school, and later worked full-
time at the Clifton Mercantile Company, in
the ready-to-wear and dry goods store. Dan
and Mary retired from their work at the store
in 1979 and have enjoyed traveling but also
have more time to devote to their church,
family, and civic endeavors.
