THREE SUBDIVISIONS
Commerce. There were twenty-two entries, including
a large number of roses, also zinnias, dahlias, marigolds,
water lilies, tithonia or Mexican sunflower, and ferns.
The purpose of the show was to create more interest in
flowers and shrubbery and, also, to arouse interest in
forming a garden club in Denton. Because of the fact
that Denton has some of the finest roses to be found
anywhere and that the soil is well adapted to the grow-
ing of shrubbery, the city has gained a wide reputation
for beautiful flowers. Another purpose of the show
was to encourage people to make their homes and yards
more beautiful for the Centennial year, so that visitors
may get a true picture of the beauties of Texas and es-
pecially of Denton and Denton County.
The central sandy portion of Denton county pro-
duces good crops of peanuts, sweet potatoes, water mel-
ons, cantaloupes, peaches, pears, plums, grapes, toma-
toes, blackberries, dewberries, and strawberries. The
strawberries grown around Aubrey are large and juicy
and have a ready sale in local markets in the county.
Grapes do well in this section, and with a little better
care and attention a steady and rather large near-by
market could be found. The cultivation of peanuts--
seems to be on the increase. While peanut prices were
somewhat better in 1933 than last year, the 1934 crop
was larger in acreage. The 1934 crop brought seventy-
five cents per bushel. The average yield per acre varies
