GEOGRAPHY OF DENTON COUNTY
roses. Oklahoma, Kansas, and Tennessee represent a
steadily growing market for Denton's nursery products.
The following nurseries are located in Denton: Bovell
Nursery, Hoffman Nursery, Foster Nursery, Gentry
Nursery, Selby Nursery, Erwin Nursery, Jarnigan
Nursery. However, the government census for 1930
stated that the county had seventeen nurseries.
The following kinds of roses are grown in these nur-
series: American Beauty, red; American Beauty, white;
Columbia, pink; Countess of Illchester, dark pink;
Crusader, red; Dame Edith Helen, bright pink; E. G.
Hill, red; Francis Scott Key, red; Golden Ophelia,
yellow; Kaiser Augusta Victoria, cream white; Lady
Hillingdon, yellow; Los Angeles, salmon pink; Lux-
umberg, yellow; Pierre S. DuPont, deep yellow; Pink
Radiance; President Hoover, orange red; Priscilla,
pink; Rev. F. Page Roberts, apricot yellow; Red Ra-
diance; Roselyn, canary yellow; Sensation, red; Talis-
man, orange red. There are several other types than
those mentioned here. The sandy soil of the Cross
Timbers has a tough subsoil, so the moisture is held in
fairly close proximity to the root system; hence, Den-
ton is known as a "City of Roses."
The first down-town flower show in Denton was held
at the Handy Motor Company building on South Lo-
cust Street on October 19, 1935. The show was spon-
sored by the Civic Bureau of the Denton Chamber of
