GEOGRAPHY OF DENTON COUNTY
true that the yield per acre of crops has decreased in
Denton County. The whole thing can be summed up
by saying the farmer has made improper use of his
land: there have been times when cropping has been
continuous on the same land for decades; the exploita-
tion of land with the idea of clearing new land has been
a bad practice. Contour crop stripping is new to the
majority of farmers, but with so many agencies now
interested in saving the soil the contour method will
soon be used universally. The experiment station in
the county has made a special study of the soy bean,
and results show that it is not as good as a seed producer
or as a soil fertilizer for Denton County as is the cow-
pea.
It might be well to make some general statements
relative to the relation of the E. C. W. to the farmer
who asks for help on his farm program. The E. C. W.
agrees to the following relationships:
1. To make a sketch of the farm to map all cultural
and physical items.
2. To make an erosion survey of the farm.
3. To check existing terraces and to lay off and check
new terrace lines on crop lands when needed.
4. To lend farmers available equipment for making
outlet ditches and to furnish labor and material to pro-
tect the outlet ditches.
5. To construct all check dams, overfalls, etc. To
