of the drive. It was at a later period that the Hager-
man family, of apple fame, took over the Chisum prop-
erty around Roswell. Chisum died in 1884 in Eureka
Springs, Arkansas, and his body was brought to his boy-
hood home in Paris, Texas, for burial. He had accum-
ulated money to the extent of half a million dollars,
nearly all of which he left to his niece, Sally Chisum
Robert, who died only a few years ago.
While perhaps the Chisum name and the "Long
Rail" brand are given more prominence in song and in
story than the names of other Denton County cowmen,
there were many others in the county who were among
the state's most outstanding men in the cattle business.
Take the name of Burk Burnett, known to all Amer-
ica for his famous "6666" brand, called the Four Six
brand. Jules Verne Allen says the Four Six brand was
adopted in memory of a lucky strike at a poker game
which won for Burk Burnett a ranch and a herd of cat-
tle. In 1924 Texas Christian University received four
million dollars of the Burk Burnett fortune. His start
in the cattle business was made on the Grand Prairie
section of Denton County. Today the Deussen family
own the old Burk Burnett ranch land. Luther Clark, an-
other cattleman, who got his start in the county and who
makes his home in Quanah, Texas, is said to be the only
living cowman who was present at the meeting in
Graham, Texas, when the Texas Cattle Raisers' Associa-
