GEOGRAPHY OF DENTON COUNTY
nucleus of the settlement was begun at the mouth of
Oliver Creek and on the interstream area between
Oliver Creek and Denton Creek. Today the Santa Fe
railroad runs through the area where this French colony
existed. But it seemed the Icarians were doomed to
unhappy experiences. It is true, they occupied a per-
ipheral location at this time when a more neighborly
position might have been to their advantage, but the
Comanches did not disturb them, for the Indians wanted
horses chiefly and these new French settlers had no
horses. The ranger trail was within eight miles of the
settlement and the rangers and the French Icarians be-
came warm friends.
Time passed, and the Peters Colony could not keep
all of the big promises which were made. The store
of the Peters Colony, which was at Stewartville, brought
in manufactured goods from England which were sold
to the French at a fair price, but the French were never
able to pay for their purchases. Things went from bad
to worse. The colony sued the Icarians, but the Icar-
ians, of course, could pay nothing. During the first
year of the settlement unusually heavy rains fell during
the spring and early summer and crops were a complete
failure. There had not been sufficient time for the dig-
ging of a well for a domestic water supply; so the
Icarians used water from Oliver Creek. Whether they
brought malaria with them from France or contracted
