HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY
eastern Texas are conspicuously absent in the north-
central part of the state.
For several years Texas has considered the readjust-
nent of county boundaries as an economic measure.
There seems to be more economic justification for such
a program in other parts of the state than in the north-
central area, and combinations of county units in this
part of Texas do not seem so imminent. And while
the location of Denton is geographically congenial, due
to comparable topographic forms and similar climatic
influences which promote a rather uniform program of
economic responses, the day for a change in county pat-
terns here will likely never arrive.
Let us go back beyond the date of organization for
the county, a stretch of years, when Texas was under
Mexican regime. At that time the Mexican govern-
ment had created a few counties in what is now Texas.
Red River County in northeastern Texas was created
by Mexico, and the Denton County area was a part of
this big Mexican County. So far, efforts to find the
exact date for the birth of the original Red River coun-
ty have failed, but histories tell us it was some time be-
tween 1830-1835. But Texas, being a peripheral (on
the outer edge) possession of Mexico, was hard to hold,
so in March, 1836, the little town of Washington, on
the Gulf Coast, was host to a most significant gathering,
the Texas Secession Convention. It will always be of
