series of ball bearings 17 are disposed be-
tween the complementing ball races 14 and
cones 16 to enable the disks 12 and ring 15
to rotate relative to one another.
5 The ring 15 is secured to the lower end of
the handle 11, and to this end, a pair of ar-
cuate plates 19 are secured to opposite sides
of the handle 11 adjacent its lower end, by
means of a rivet or other securing member
10 20 engaged through the plates 19 and the
lower end portion of the handle, and the
plates 19 are provided with depending arms
21 offset away from each other to provide a
fork. The lower ends of the arms 21 are
15 bent angularly toward one another, as at
22, and are engaged within slots or recesses
23 provided in diametrically opposite por-
tions of the ring 15. The arms 21 may be
soldered or otherwise secured to the ring 15.
20 In this manner, the ring 15 is rigidly se-
cured to the lower end of the handle 11, in
spaced relation therewith, and the ring 15
being disposed between the two sets or se-
ries of ball bearings 17, will enable the
25 dasher staff to be. reciprocated with the
handle, although the dasher staff is free to
rotate. The nuts 13 hold the disks 12 to-
gether, to thereby prevent their excessive
separation, except when the device is sep-
30 arated.
The present device may be employed for
churning purposes, in the usual mode, it
being noted that when the dasher staff is
reciprocated, it will be rotated to thereby
35 impart both a reciprocatory and rotatory
movement to the dasher or agitator for
thoroughly agitating and churning the con-
tents of the body or receptacle 1. The pecu-
liar formation of the dasher or agitator is
40 of advantage in properly agitating and
churning the contents of the churn body,
and for enabling the butter to be readily
lifted from the churn body with the dasher.
The plug 5 provides a durable wear mem-
45 ber for the dasher staff, it being noted that
the cover or cap is provided with the drain
apertures 7 adjacent the plug 5 whereby any
milk and cream raised through the slot 6
with the dasher staff, may flow back into thechurn body through the said apertures with- 50
out interference.
When the handle 11 is reciprocated, it
will carry the dasher staff upwardly and
downwardly therewith, to properly actuate
the same. When the handle 11 is moved 55
downwardly, the ring 15 will be brought to
bear on the lower set of ball bearings 17, to
thereby depress the dasher staff, while when
the handle is raised, the ring 15 will be
brought upward against the upper series of 6o
ball bearings 17, to elevate the dasher staff.
In this manner, there is a continual anti-
frictional bearing between the handle and
dasher staff, to enable the dasher staff to
rotate freely as it is reciprocated. 65
Having thus described the invention, what
is claimed as new is:
1. In a churn, a churn body, a cover there-
for, a twisted dasher staff engaged through
the cover, a dasher carried by the dasher 70
staff within the churn body, a pair of disks
mounted upon the upper end portion of the
dasher staff and having annular ball races
in their adjacent faces, a handle, a fork at-
tached to one end thereof, a ring secured to 75
the ends of the fork arms and disposed be-
tween the said disks, the inner side of the
ring being formed with ball cones, and ball
bearings disposed between the respective
ball cones and ball races. 80
2. In a churn, a churn body, a cover there-
for, a twisted dasher staff engaged through
the cover, a dasher carried by the staff with-
in the churn body, the dasher staff having a
shank at its upper end, a pair of disks 85
mounted upon the said shank, a pair of nuts
threaded upon the shank to hold the disks
against separation, a handle, a ring at-
tached to the handle and disposed between
the said disks, and anti-frictional bearings 90
disposed between the said ring and disks.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing
as my own, I have hereto affixed my sig-
nature in the presence of two witnesses.
