AN ADDRESS
An address by Col Horace
Welch by rpqueet to the High
School of Jefferson Texas
An ancient writer truthfully said
The ond of all education is tho dovol
optnent of character Character is tho
sum of all tho elcmonts and qualities
that inako up tho man Obedience in-
dustry neatness truth honesty punc-
tuality kindnoBo mutual holpfulness
courage loyalty love of homo love of
country and its emblem tho flag
Grant that wo ere born with inherent
tendencies and that character of some
kind 1b being formed every day of our
lives yes every momenr of our HveB
whether wo will o not Tho question
comes homo to you for you to decide
for yourselves assisted by your teach-
ers how it may best be developed
Thoughts lead to action action repeat-
ed form habits and the sum of all our
habits is character Common place
though it may Beem or appear tho do-
ing of ones duty embraces the highest
ideal of life and character Thero may-
be nothing heroic about it but tho
common lot of mon or women either is
not heroic Tho most influential of all
the virtues are those in most request
for daily use they wear tho best and
last tho longest
Character is what we are reputation
is what we ore thought to be The men
of genuine character may be of slow
growth they may be misunderstood by
some and misrepresented by others
but eventually inspire the respect and
the confidence which they deserve Wo
exercise influence over others only ac-
cording to what is inourselves
NATIONS LIKB INDIVIDUALS HAVE THKIH
CIIAKACTEIt
National character will depend upon
the people that constitute the nation
It has been well and truthfully said
The prosperity of a country consists
in the numborof its cultivated citizens
in the man and women of education
and refinement enlightmentand char-
acter Here are to bo found its real
power To impress upon your minds
the magnitude and importance of these
truths and you heed the admonition I
give you today you rejofco and make
glad your parents and your teachers
reflect credit upon this school and hon-
or yourselves and tho purpose of my
visit will be achieved The history of
our Nation gives you an eminent illus-
tration of the truth embodied in my
addroas What child of sufficient age
to read tho history of the United States
eince it first colonization does not
know of the noble men and women of
tho Pilgrim Fathers who landed on tho
shore of bleak New England Of a
Miles Standish a choson leader of those
noblo mon and women who leaving
country and homo boarded that good
ship tho May Flower and sailed away
to an unknown land to find homes for
themselves and under and by the prov
idence of God were landed upon Ply
mouth Bock and founded tho colony of
Massachusetts Are not tho names of
Tohn Haacock John Adams of Paul
Revere of Gen Warren who fell at
Bunker HHI known revered and re
memberod throughout this broad land
as the pioneers of liberty and freedom
Tho character of such men that I have
named and the heroes of 1770 Wash
ington Jefferson Ben Franklin Pat
rick Henry Gon Francis Marion and
Light Horse Harry Leo as ho was eall
ed and a host others who by tho might
of tho word and mightier pen wrested
the tklrteen celonies from their vassa
lege to a king and gave birth to a nation
of froemea and unfurled to a wonder-
ing verM o r flag Old Glory as the
erableat of sovereignty of tho people
by the people and for the people
The founders of tho new republic
made ni proclaimed also to the world
this solemn declaration We believe
the truths te be selfevident that all
mea trtfa created free and equal and
endowed by their Creator with certain
inalienable rights snch as life liberty
and the pursuit of happiness as the
basic principle of the newborn nation
Tho colonies bad with commendable
unanimity united as one people
fought to finish under the command of
Gen George Washington tho battle for
freedom and after peace was establish-
ed between Great Britan and the colo-
nies the several colonies framed con-
stitutions for themselves and became
thirteen independent states and then
forseeing in cose of war or invasion by
a foreign power tho necessity of being
Mfflei Fgm lraj
united they framed a constitution
uniting themselves together to be known
for all time to come as tho United
States of America In reviewing in part
the past history of the United StateB I
have named only a few of the men who
founded and established this govern
ment but we will now come down to
the time when our own beloved State of
Texas was first a republic and after-
wards admitted into the Union as a
sovereign State
You havo celebrated tho anniversary
of the battle of San Jacinto whero tho
Indeponpence of Texas was achieved by
tho valor of a few bravo mon a very
small army of loss than a thousand
men who formed in line of battle com-
manded by Gon Sam Houston You no
doubt bavo read and are fully advised
as to the horrors of tho siege of the
Alamo by tho Mexican army under tho
command of Santa Anna whero tho
whole garrison was slaughtered whoro
fell tho heroic David Crockettand the
whole of his devoted band of patriots
in their struggle to free Texas from the
tyrany of a despotic dictator and none
escaped to tell the story of their heroic
death Thermopylo hadits mesBonger
of death the Alamo had none The
names of all those bravo men who gave
up their lives so heroically should bo
preserved in the archives of tho State
if it has not already been dono that
future generations yet to como may
learn to know and revere them I will
not tresspass upon your time now to
recall to your minds now tho names of
other Texas patriots whoso glorious
deeds under tho Lone Star Banner
during that crucial period whom tho
people of Toxas and the Nation delight
to honor and reverence You are no
doubt familiar with all their names
more so than mysolffor as I grow older
my memory is getting moro and more
treacherous
At San Jacinto Mexicos dictator
Santa Anna wob taken prisoner and
compelled to acknowledge the Inde
pendence of Toxas A convention of
delegates mot and fonculatod a consti-
tution republican in form which was
adopted by the people Houston was
elected by a vote of the people of tho
new republic its first president After
a few years bad elapsed as an indepen-
dent nation Texas applied for and was
admitted into tho Union of States and
another star was added to our flag
Ought wo not then as citizens of this
glorious State to honor and rovero tho
memory of all of its heroes who dying
bequeathed to us and to posterity that
was to como after them this noble State
Texas as an inheritance in which to
build our homes to rear and educate
our children Only a few veterans old
and feeble of the Mexican war aro left
alive among us today thoy deserve to
havo their pathway made Btnooth as
thoy journoy onward to tho grave And
dear children young ladies and young
gentlemen before I close let me en-
treat you to properly value this golden
opportunity to impiovo and advanco
yourselves in your studies every day
and every boury hour arevery precious
moments of your youth A good educa
tion fltB you for manifold duties of life
to bo true and respected men and wom
en you should love and show respect
for your teachers and let them know by
your attention to their instructions
that you do by so doing you will in-
spire them to take greater pains to ad-
vance you in knowledge for you will
learn in after life That knowledge is
power May we nothopo that before
this term of school closes that a neat
flag staff will have been erected and
that tho National flag will be floating
over this school house Where there
is a will there is a way
I thank you teachers and scholars
ladies and gentlemen for your patient
and kind attention May boavens
blessing ovor attend you in your jour
ney1 of life again I thank you
