lo taxpayers. The column ans-
wers questions most frequently
n3ked by taxpayers.
Q Five of us are in a car
pool and drive to work every
day alternating the driving
each week. Can we deduct
some of the automotive costs?
A No. The cost of repairs
gas and similar items incurred
in connection with an auto
used to and from work are
personal expenses and there-
fore not deductible.
O Does the income tax
surcharge apply to income
pnrned during the second half
of 1970?
A Yes. The tax law as
amended by the Tax Reform
Act of 1969 imposes a 2i7t
surcharge for all of 1970.
Thus tax on income earned by
a calendar year taxpayer any
time during the year is subject
to the surcharge. The tables in
the back of your tax form
package should be used for
computing the surcharge if
your income tax is under
$2020. For a tax of $2020 or
more multiply your tax by
2U r; to determine the sur-
charge. Q After accounting to my
