WASHINGTON'S COITIN
nv ). E. DOW.
A ftiend gave me a piece of the coffin of the
Father of our Country which was taken from his
tomb at the time of the transfer of his remains to
the mirblc sarcoplngc in July last. Such a relic
shall never be pirtcd with by mcand hereafter my
children as they handle the sacred fragment
thill exchim with holy admiration " This corned
the form of Washington."
The mnmrc'i's lmusolcum may rise
In sculptured beauty to the skios:
And Ilashing gems tiny mark the spot
Where tt ram's sleep lij mau forgot;
The py ratuid may mock at time
And lite a monument of crime;
And Ahric in his pride may sleep
Amid the caicrns of the deep
Whose dark and ihundur-spc iking flood
Was turned for him o'er fields of blood.
'Neath iticd towers the proud of birth
lU-iy mingle with their parent earth!
And storied arch and chiseled urn
Mty speak their meaning in their turn;
The lofty pillar's basement wide
May tell how Pumpcy lived and died;
' And gilded inosijiiu may brightly show
Where blood) Mah'mut sleeps below.
From bannered aisle and mitred tomb
From Druid's cairn and express gloom
From pictured will and sculptured stone
I'll seek the tomb of Washington;
And while ihc eagle soars abotc
I'll liud it in a nation's luvc.
The mo'intain peik the giint stream
Tne hoi) steeple's gu'den gleam
The filling furcst dttk and old
The tin iter's lodge the herdsman's fold
The city loner v.liosc ocean fleet
Makes c.irlh's remotest regions meet
The reaper's song at Inrvest eve
Where fury feet their circles leave
The cliiiiiless jiresj the village school
Where knowledge rears her golden rule;
These tell the wonders he hath done
And bid Columbia prize her siin;
While stars upon the breast of night
Trace out his name in living light.
No gnldcn crown no sceptred hill J
V.i- blizoncd on his sombre pill;
No Kiiintn purple robctl his form
Tho' farcmi si in war's bloody storm
No longer stamped with rapine's stain
Led on by princes formed his train.
Wrapped in the bann.Tuf the brtvc
His brothers bore him to his grave;
While o'er him cvcilisting fame
Inscribed new glory in his name.
Dark temples reared in crime and lust

Selfishness. Within his house in a great arm
chair before the lire sat an old gray-headed man
ripe for the grave. Twas winter and the cold wind
whistled among the leafless branches of the trees
and the now and sleet rattled against the windows.
The old mm chuckled for ho was warm and com-
fcrlableand the biting blast touched him not. He
said " I have enough lam rich so blow ye winds
and drift ye suons I am safe." A servant entered
and said " Sir a woman is at the door trembling
in the cold his nowhere to sleep no home to
go to. She begs for a corner of your kitchen to
pass the night in."' "Awij; I've no room for
thieving beggars there is a tavern close by toll
her to go there." " She siys she lias no money
and begs you to give her enough to buy a meal and
lodgings." "Begone! drive her ofT. What I've
got's my own and I'll keep it. I've none to squan-
der upon mendicants.'
The nct morning thojild man stepped out into
the porch and there upon onoof the benches sat
tho poor beggar woman. His rage was kindled.
"Did I not tell you I jave nothing for vou im-
pudence? Come come tramp. Leave my house
1 say; d'ye hear?" Sho heard him not! She was
dead. The old man smote Jiis breast and entered
his house. He never entered it again for be also
died and died miserable though rich.

dom that the denizens of a city have an opportunity
of seeing as interesting a sight as was witnessed by
scrcral gentlemen from Ferry Bir on Sundi)
morning week. A lirge Bald Eagle was seen
skimming Ihc air and floating up the river on a
foraging expedition for the replenishment of his
royal larder; but apparently finding no quarn
worthy a stoop he soared away and was lost to
the sight in the clouds. A short time after a fisli-
hink appeared and squinting with a knowing
glance across the broad sheet of water pounced
upon a fino fat iish and mounting prepared to
return to his nest up the south branch. He had
not flown far before lie put about and steering in
the wind's eve siilcJ down towards the biy with
all the swiftness his powers could compass. Pre-
sently a daik speck was seen a mile or two in his
wake and soon the royal bird was discovered dart-
ing after his prey his tail stuck a-pcak and his
wings compressed flapping with a rapidity that sent
htm along with the swiftness of an arrow from the
the bow of bold Kobh Hood. The hawk knew
his pursuer and practised a ruse by durling upwards
when about a mile this side of the fort. The eagle
darted under him and rising appirently perpendi-
cularly a few feet above the hawk give him a flip
with one of his wing which caused him to drop
the fish and the roval pirate dropping from his
air height caught the fish before it reached the
water anil skimmed oil" triuuiplimt lcating the
poor hank to seek his breakfast where ho best
might rind it. It is thus with mankind. We see
a petty prjn.ee plundering his neighbor until a mure
powerful Onei'likc the eagle with the hawk robs
him in turn and reaps tha reward of his tjrannv.

" No appearance"1 replied the lawyer.

servant appeared with a turkey.
" Faith! a fine lolcn it is" rejoined the printer.
At the beginning of tic week (July 0) the well
known character "Old Jack" the gigantic and
and venerable swan so long known to the public
departed this life upon the canal in the enclosure
of St. James' Park Loidon at the advanced age
of 70. Old Jack was hatched about the year 1770
on the piece of water attached to old Buckingham
pilacc and fur minyyelr' basked in the sunshine
oTrojal favor Queen Charlotte being cMremelj
partial to him and frqucnlly fed him herself.
When the pleasure grounds in St. James's Park
were laid out Old 'Jack was removed. His im-
mense size sociable disposition and undaunted
courage have often excited the admiration of the
public. Jack's strength and courage were asto"
nishing. Frequently has he seized an unlucky
dog who chanced to rpproach the edge of his
watery domain by the neck and drowned him.
Upon one occasion he seized a boy about twelve
ears of age who had been teasing him by the
Icgof his tronsers and dragged him into the water
up to his knees. Jack Iratvcvcr never acted upon
the offensive but alwajs upon the defensive; and
if not anno)cd was exceedingly tractable. But
the march of modern improvement has affected
poor Jack as much as it has done thousands of
more pretending bipeds? The Ornitholog cal
Society was formed and a host of feathered foreign-
ers found their way to (he canal with whom Jack
had many fierce and furious encounters and inva-
riably came off victorious.' But a legion oTPolish
geese at length arrived wliu commenced hostilities
with Jack immediately. Despising everything like
even warfare they attacked him in a body and
pecked him so severely that he drooped for a few
days and then died. London paper.

very singular cisc of a Swiss who had undergone

iMroSatniLrriES. A characteristic tnit of Col.
Walhcc a British officer in the Eist Indies is
recollected by those who served with the army in
the Deccan. At the scigo of Gawilghur he had
been charged with the execution of certain details
necessary to tho capture of tint place. A heavy
gun had been directed lo be conveyed by night to
.111 important point and its transportation over the
most rugged motutiain lg baffled all endea-
vors that tho artillery officer in despair reported
the accomplishment of it lo be impossible. Im-
possible sir!" exclaimed Col. Wallace who had
all his life maintained the most rigid adherence to
obedience; ' Impossible! let us sec."1 He then
called for a light pulled out the instructions from
his pocket and hiving read them said " Oh no
not impossible the order is positive.' The resolu-
tion evinced tho efficacy of the order and also
afforded another 'proof that implicit obedience
when accompanied with devoted zeal will in gene-
ral overcome every difficulty.

Sultan- Myiijiood The uso of wine and
strong drinks is forbidden by the Koran and drunk-
ards aro seldom found among the Moslems. But
Mahmoud tbc late Sultan of Turkey a man en
dowed with a vigorous constitution a powerful
and energetic mind who had done much to im
prove the condition of his subjects so far forgot
what was due to his own character and dignity to
his religion and to the example which he should
place before his people as to quiff to excess the
intoxicating cup. In this way he ruined an excel-
lent constitution and absolutely died of delirium
tremens!
The conduct of Mahmoud in this particular ap
pears to be view cd by his son and successor not
as a pattern to imitate but as an example to deter.
It is said and we hope it will prove to be correctly
said that on his coining to the throne one of his
first acts was to cause the immense stock of rich
wines and other intoxicating drinks which bis fa-
ther had collected with great labor and expense
to be thrown into the Bosphorus. The present
Sultan of Turkey has embraced the doctrines of
total abstinence. Boston Journal.
A Fine Little Fellow. In tho Criminal

'What is it?' 'Thou shalt not bear false witness
against ihy neighbor.' Ho! all c witnesses learn
